Junior Initiatives:
One of our successful innovations this year
has been to invite all parents of Year 0 and Year 1 to two sessions we’ve called
“Working Together”. These sessions have been facilitated by Helen Jenkins,
(Resource Teacher of Literacy), Jude Mortlock, (Resource Teacher of Learning and
Behaviour) and Jocelyn Gallop, (Deputy Principal) and have included:
·
The
importance of early literacy
·
How to help
your child at home with practical examples – including modeling hearing children
read
·
Guidelines
for a positive home and school partnership
·
Nutrition
·
Letterland
·
Maths
activities
·
Question and
Answer session
Parents who attended both
sessions received a free “Let’s Go” pack which included 5 or 6 books- at least
two of which were hard covered, rhymes, Letterland information, 4 maths games,
notes and pamphlets to help families work in partnership
with us, nutrition information, behaviour information,
pencil and pad and 2 small toys.
These
have been very well received so we will be offering these
sessions again next year.
Other
Junior Initiatives which have continued this year include
HPP (Hei Awhiawhi Tamariki ki te Panui Pukapuka - Supporting
Children with Story Book reading), working with small groups
for reading and writing within the classroom and using the
Te Whariki syllabus.
